Desperado was the large-budget El Mariachi, basically realizing the dream Robert Rodriguez had while making the first movie. It's an action-packed thrill ride with a loaded cast of 90's talent led by Antonio Banderas as El Mariachi. Fans of the first film will absolutely love this sequel, as it expands on the drug empire of Mexico and the Mariachi's true motives behind his blood-fueled rampage through small Mexican towns.

The main villain of Desperado is Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), who is apparently Moco's (from the first one) boss. Apparently, all of the blame for Moco's actions falls on Bucho, which is why the Mariachi is single-handedly shattering his empire. The action sequences are gorgeous, with some of the coolest stunts being performed alongside a boatload of blood spatter. Only Rodriguez could write a scene involving three mariachis with killer guitar cases and have it turn out more badass than corny. Still, it was awesome to see Antonio Banderas and Carlos Gallardo fight side by side.

While not as well-written as the first film, Desperado is still an awesome action thriller that sports a great cast of character actors. This film is 100% pure 90's action courtesy of Robert Rodriguez, who has clearly been having a ball for the past twenty years and shows no signs of slowing down. This film is just proof that he is the best at what he does, which is gritty violence with a Mexican flair. I say keep 'em coming.
