The cast is always the first thing I think about when Dazed and Confused comes up in conversation. All those names and interesting careers that followed after this cult classic from 1993. Of course, Richard Linklater went on to make some more awesome films but the range of this cast is insane. I never get tired of rewatching this gem that takes place on the last day of school in 1976 Austin, Texas. The film focuses on the incoming freshmen and the upcoming seniors.
Let’s go ahead and talk about the elephant in the room. The music in Dazed is absolutely unstoppable. One of the greatest soundtracks ever assembled. Even if you don’t like watching aimless teens and slackers live a day of their life, you will surely enjoy some of the tunes playing throughout. The main character would have to be Mitch Kramer who is played by Wiley Wiggins, an actor that got lost in the shuffle. Mitch is an incoming freshman and a wicked good pitcher. Can you imagine throwing while multiple 17 year old douche bags are waiting to wale on you? Wiggins isn’t the easiest actor to watch, but I don’t mind because there are so many good characters popping up all the time. The second main character is Randall “Pink” Floyd, who is about to be a senior and the starting quarterback on the football team. The starting quarterback on any high school team is a very important person in Texas. Mitch and Pink cross paths and the film just kind of bounces around the characters as their day progresses into the night. Dazed will live on forever due to it’s extremely dedicated fan base that I’m definitely a part of. It used to be really cool to like this film and now it seems like it’s uncool to bring it up at all. I don’t really give a shit, because I’m smiling throughout the entire film every single time I watch it. To see these actors when they were young and dressed up in 70’s clothing is a wonderful treat, but I really do enjoy the content that lies within Dazed and Confused. Richard Linklater has mastered this kind of raw storytelling over time and it’s always fun to go back to where it all started. |
