Captain America:
|
As the last Marvel movie before the Avengers finally assembled, Captain America had a lot to live up to. It did just that and then some. This movie is awesome in so many different ways, most notably Hugo Weaving's incredible performance as the devious Red Skull. This film is yet another perfect piece of the MCU puzzle.
I did have my doubts about whether or not Chris Evans could live up to my expectations of Captain America. After all, he didn't wow fans with his portrayal of the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies. Evans blew my expectations out of the water and provided a captivating and believable performance that convinced me of his worthiness to hold the shield. And of course, who else but Hugo Weaving could've played the Red Skull? Of Marvel's Phase One, this film is tied with Iron Man as my favorite of the five films. It's a dramatic war story wrapped around an epic origin story and peppered with layers of references to the MCU that perfectly connect it to the other films and flawlessly bridge the gaps. Suffice it to say, I highly enjoyed this movie. |
Captain America: The First Avenger is single handedly one of Marvel's best Phase One films, right up there with Iron Man. It successfully took one of comics's most iconic characters and gave him a great movie full of action, adventure, and humor. It also served as a great lead up to the cinematic event that would be the Avengers finally getting together for the first time.
Chris Evans is perfect as Captain America, exuding many of the character's quality traits. He plays the boy scout type role to perfection and is another case of great casting by Marvel. Hugo Weaving was also great as iconic villain, Red Skull. He brings the character to wonderful life and is clearly having a lot of fun with it. I hope to see more of Red Skull in any future installments. Captain America, like the first Iron Man, is one of Marvel's best Phase One films. It's a great, pulpy war story that also serves as the origin story for one of comics's greatest characters. Featuring strong performances from the cast and MCU references throughout, Marvel has another winner on their hands. |
