Boyhood is one of those films that revolutionizes the movie industry. Richard Linklater's highly ambitious 12 year project turned out to be a genuinely moving and enjoyable film. The life of young Mason is one that a lot of people can relate to. I know I did.
It's incredible to watch Ellar Coltrane grow up throughout the course of the film. It's something that's never been done before and will probably never be done again. Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke deliver honest and relatable performances that prove their talents as actors. Coltrane himself carries this epic drama with skill way beyond his age, delivering a genuine performance of a child who becomes a young man on his way to college. Richard Linklater amazed everybody with this film, and proved yet again his incomparable talents as a filmmaker. Boyhood is his magnum opus and will forever be recognized as the film that attempted the impossible and pulled it off. |
A movie that not only revolutionizes the way films can be made, but also delivers an honest look at life as one grows up. Boyhood is a touching film about the trials of life and growing up in this crazy world. While the nearly plotless and slow paced film may turn off some, there will be others that find a lot to relate to throughout the runtime. Being a college graduate myself, there were quite a bit of moments I was able to relate to.
The main thing holding this film together is the top notch performances from all the actors. Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke deliver relatable performances as divorced parents that are both trying to do what's best for their kids. Speaking of kids, the real star of this film is Ellar Coltrane. The audience gets to see him literally grow up before their very eyes, all the way from being a young boy to a college student. It's a remarkable transformation to watch anchored by Coltrane's solid performance. I hope to see him in more things in the future. I will also say that, being a native Texan, it was really cool to see cities and towns I've been to several times myself. Richard Linklater really blew people away with this movie, and for good reason. The fact that he filmed this for 12 years and let the main actors age in real time is nothing short of amazing. Boyhood, while slow at times, is a great film that takes a realistic look at growing up. It will be hard for Linklater to top this one. |
