Army of Darkness is a quintessential cult hit that, in my opinion, dominates the Evil Dead franchise. It is a hilarious black comedy that obviously enjoys itself, considering how ridiculous the plot and characters are. Bruce Campbell became a cultural icon with this film, cementing the character of Ash as the most badass zombie killer ever.
Who would have that moving the action to the Middle Ages would have somehow made it even better? This was a gamble that clearly paid off as Army of Darkness is one of my all-time favorites and still holds up, even though some of the Deadite effects are starting to resemble old Harryhausen films. Also, when people talk about this film, they rarely mention Bruce Campbell's other performance as Evil Ash. In one of the strangest scenes of the movie (and that is saying something), Ash swallows a smaller version of himself and grows a full-size evil twin, who ends up commanding the Deadite army after Ash gives him a mouthful of boomstick. Campbell really shows off his talents by playing both characters extremely well. I happen to think Army of Darkness is the best film in the Evil Dead franchise because of its seamless blend of comedy and horror, not to mention its endless quotability. I've been a huge fan of this franchise for years, starting with this film. It will never fade into obscurity as there will always be horror fans out there who adore it, myself included. |
The third film in the Evil Dead franchise proves to be just as entertaining as the first two. Even though though it plays as more of a straight comedy, it's still a ton of fun and insanely quotable. Bruce Campbell further cements himself as the face of this franchise. This is a great movie and will stand the test of time.
