Shudder truly is a treasure trove of horror gold. Every horror fan should shell five bucks a month for a subscription. It's worth it just to find films like this. Anything for Jackson is an unnerving nightmare of a movie, and one that I am proud to say scared the holy hell out of me several times. Being a massive horror fan, I'm quite desensitized, so finding movies that actually terrified me is a rare occurrence. This one has been added to the list. The premise alone is freakish, but the execution is almost perfect. What happens when a Satanist couple performs a reverse exorcism on a pregnant woman? They open a door they can't close.
Audrey (McCarthy) and Henry (Richings) are mourning their grandson Jackson, who died in a car crash. Being devout Satanists, they discover a way to resurrect him using black magic. They kidnap poor Shannon (Mantelos) and perform the spell, hoping Jackson's spirit will possess Shannon's unborn child. What happens is they turn their home into a divining rod for the dead, and must find a way to close the door before it's too late. The creature designs are creative, and there are several scenes that will haunt you. Mine is the eight-foot tall trick or treating ghost. You'll know what I mean. Anything for Jackson is a horror gem that would've shined with a theatrical release in a normal year. Thankfully, it found a home as a Shudder original, and I hope more people get the chance to check it out. This movie is freaky, and made for die-hard horror fans like me. |
