When I first saw the trailer for Antebellum, it looked a bit confusing. Was this a time travel movie? Was this all a dream? Is it horror or drama? The truth is far less complex and infinitely more horrifying, making for arguably the most disturbing horror film of 2020 so far. Critics have all but condemned this one as a misfire, and I can't believe that. Did they watch the same movie I did? This film is pure nightmare fuel, crafting a frightening reality that seems all too possible in our divided nation. A 28% Rotten Tomatoes score is a travesty. This one will stay with you.
Janelle Monáe plays successful author Veronica Henly, or maybe she plays a slave girl named Eden. I don't want to spoil the movie for any of you prospective viewers out there, as the shock of the reveal is too crucial to your enjoyment. I'll just say that she gives one hell of a performance, and Jack Huston plays a sadistic shit a little too well. This film's entire concept is set up extremely well, tricking you into thinking it could be one of several big twists. What it does end up being is so simplistically brilliant that I almost didn't believe it at first. Antebellum is an unsettling, infuriating horror thriller that does not deserve the harsh criticism it's received. People say it's unpleasant and lacks scares. It's supposed to be unpleasant. Only a monster would consider this a pleasant viewing experience. And scares are subjective. I found this to be downright terrifying at times, and I think you will too if you give it a chance. |
