This movie never had a chance. Everyone discounted it as soon as they heard the title. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter? Get the fuck out of here. And yeah, it's an uneven film that varies from goofy vampire movie to super serious war movie to unofficial biopic. Picking a lane and sticking with it would've benefited the film greatly. But you know what? It's far better than it has any business being. This thing should be a straight-up trainwreck, and to many it was. But to me it was fan fiction, and there's nothing wrong with a little fan fiction. Probably didn't help that it came out the same year as Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, though.

In this bizarro world, Abraham Lincoln (Walker) witnesses his mother's murder at the hands of a vampire. He dedicates his life to revenge, and when he meets vampire hunter Henry Sturges (Cooper), he's trained in the art of vampire killing. Along the way, Abraham meets the beautiful Mary Todd (Winstead), develops an interest in local politics, and inexplicably becomes president of the United States because of course he does. It makes absolutely zero context in the film. In fact, the entire Civil War feels shoehorned into a movie about a vampire hunter. The history buff in me does hate how revamped Lincoln's history gets in this movie. But the horror fan in me is loudly shouting "It's just a movie, asshole" over and over.

This is a divisive film. There's no denying that. People hated it, as did critics. But I don't think a lot of them gave it a chance. This thing is a fun watch with a lot of problems, yes, but come on. It's about a vampire-killing President Lincoln wielding a silver axe and chopping heads. Were you expecting historical accuracy and a consistent tone? Look elsewhere, because this thing is ridiculous.
