A Night at the Roxbury is one of those early films in a comedian's career that could have completely destroyed their career. In this case, the comedians are Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan. While Kattan's career fizzled out soon after this film, Ferrell went on to make some truly hilarious films. This, however, was not one of them.
As history has shown us, SNL spin-offs are almost entirely hit or miss. A Night at the Roxbury fits smugly into the "miss" category, delivering a poor script that uses stupid dialogue in place of jokes and capitalizes on an SNL skit that wasn't even that funny to begin with. Apart from the infectious house music, there is very little to like about this film. I'm very happy that this film didn't shatter Will Ferrell's then up and coming career, as it very well could have. Somehow, Ferrell and Kattan have zero chemistry and help drive this ridiculously unfunny disaster deeper into the hole it dug itself into. |
