While this wasn't the major comeback for Keanu Reeves many were expecting, this was still a decent film that entertains for the most part. The film mixes the story of the 47 Ronin legend and infuses quite a bit of fantasy elements into it. This leads to mixed results, with the film never really deciding what it wants to be.
The performances are good for the most part. Keanu Reeves does a mostly solid job in the role of Kai, a half-breed who is never really accepted by the other samurai. The Japanese actors all help bring credibility to their parts. They really help the legend of the Ronin get the respect it deserves. I do think this film would have worked better if it had focused on a more truer approach to the tale of the Ronin, instead of adding a bunch of fantasy elements and CGI. Apart from that, the film serves as decent mindless entertainment with plenty of action and a solid performance from Keanu Reeves. A rental should suffice from this one. |
