This film was beautifully done, but extremely harsh. Some of the scenes were very hard to watch. The cast was excellent and the film itself is very moving. It earned every Oscar it received and I cannot believe Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender did not win for their performances. It will be a long time before I see Fassbender as anything but a brutal slave owner.
12 Years a Slave did a great job of showing the brutality of slavery in this country and how most white Americans could care less about the basic humanity of black Americans in that time. If you can stomach the whipping scenes, it's a really amazing film. |
This is was a phenomenal movie that was very moving, but also very hard to watch at times. The story is a brutal look at one man's time spent as a slave in the south and his constant hope that he will one day rejoin his family. The cast was superb throughout. Michael Fassbender did a phenomenal job as a sadistic slave owner, becoming one of my most hated characters I've ever seen on film.
Chiwetel Ejiofor was mesmerizing as Solomon Northup, perfectly portraying a man trying to get back to his family. The movie also did a good job of showing the brutality slavery, instead of shying away from it. By the end of the film, you'll be in tears. I know I was. This is a brilliant movie that tells a powerful story and, as long as you can stomach the more brutal scenes, should at least be viewed once in your lifetime. |
