I can only imagine that longtime Sonic the Hedgehog fans must be freaking out right now. Not only does Dr. Robotnik look game accurate now, but the sequel also introduces Sonic's allies Tails and Knuckles. Even I, who has never played a single Sonic game, know who they are. That just speaks to the impact that this franchise has had on pop culture for decades. This sequel is a perfect follow-up to 2020's surprise hit, doubling down on the video game connections and adding great character development to Sonic and his new family.
Trapped on the Mushroom World, Dr. Robotnik (Carrey, in what may be his final role. Enjoy retirement!) encounters Knuckles the Echidna (Elba, who nearly steals the show), and agrees to show him the way to Earth. Meanwhile, Sonic is having a difficult time using his powers responsibly, and is unprepared for Knuckles to show up and kick his ass because of a blood feud his people have with owls, who raised Sonic. That's when Tails (O'Shaughnessy, the only voice actor from the games to reprise her role) shows up to help Sonic beat Knuckles and Robotnik to a powerful emerald that can warp reality. It's a plot straight out of a video game, which is exactly what we all expected from this delightful sequel. Sure, the film has some odd moments, like the "Uptown Funk" dance off that felt extremely dated and the fake wedding gag that just felt out of place. But overall, it's a worthy follow-up in this surprisingly great, enjoyable franchise that teases an epic third movie I really hope we get. |
