I think it's safe to say that Hellboy is one of the most badass comic book adaptations ever made and one of Guillermo del Toro's best films. He helped turn a little known comic book character into a pop culture icon while also providing Ron Perlman with the role he will be remembered for.
Perlman's performance as Hellboy is what makes this film so awesome. He plays the character as an arrogant, brash, bad-tempered demon with a heart of gold. Alongside veteran actor John Hurt as Professor Broom, Perlman shines and holds his own. Guillermo is known for his fantastical set and creature designs, which he does not skimp on in this film. His designs for Sammael and Karl Ruprecht Kroenen are some of his best work and while his eye for set design is more explored in the sequel, he does show us wonders with his designs for the B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense). I've loved this cult favorite for years and hold it in very high esteem. It combines history with fantasy and delivers an exciting and wondrous world of fearsome demons and villainous gods of chaos. I think everyone owes it to themselves to watch this film at least once. |
